Purpose and goal

The 2026 Organization & Society Network Conference will take place in Torquay, Victoria on November 23-25, 2026. As in all O&S Network events, the main purpose is to bring together academics (and practitioners) to discuss big ideas – and to bring those ideas into action. The conference uses several formats, including keynotes, idea development workshops, project presentations, and other interactive discussions, offering both the time and the space for in-depth discussion of ideas to be developed, and for collaborative bonds to be created or strengthened.  

At our conference, no idea is too grand or too bold. We discuss the most pressing societal issues that organizations face, and critically examine the role of organization(s) in tackling these issues, including, for example, addressing climate change, poverty alleviation, overcoming polarization and divides in society, harnessing artificial intelligence, ongoing urbanization, preparing for aging populations, and many more.

About the 2026 Conference

The Organization & Society Network (O&S Network), initiated by the School of Management and Governance at UNSW Business School, Sydney, aims to build a vibrant international community of scholars studying organization and society to contribute to research, teaching, and engagement that creates positive societal impact. For the fifth time, the O&S Network will organize a conference that brings together academics (and practitioners) from across Australia, New Zealand, and around the world to discuss how to advance our understanding and impact on the relationship between organization(s) and society. 

The 2026 Organization & Society Network Conference will take place in Torquay, Victoria on November 23-25, 2026, with a welcome dinner planned on 23rd November.  As in all O&S Network events, the main purpose is to bring together academics (and practitioners) to discuss big ideas – and to bring those ideas into action. To achieve this the conference uses several formats, including keynotes, idea and paper presentations, and other interactive discussions, offering both the time and the space for in-depth discussion of ideas to be developed, and for collaborative bonds to be created or strengthened.   

The Conference seeks to act as a platform for lively exchange between and among established and early career scholars. In keeping with this objective, we welcome and encourage doctoral students to attend and present.  They will also be invited to attend a doctoral forum offering them the opportunity to meet prominent scholars in the field and to network with peers. The forum format will enable participants to raise and debate key research, publishing and early career issues of their choosing that are of particular interest to them.

Cliff Oswick is Professor of Organization Theory at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), City St George’s, University of London, UK. He served as Head of Faculty & Deputy Dean at Bayes (2011-2016), and before that spent 4 years at Queen Mary, University of London as Dean of Law & Social Sciences. He is also currently an honorary visiting professor at the University of New South Wales.

His research interests focus on the application of aspects of discourse to processes of organizing, organizational change, and diversity and inclusion. He has published over 170 academic articles and book chapters, including recent contributions to Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies.

He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Senior Editor for Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, elected member of the National Training Laboratory, and former chair of the board of trustees at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations (2014-2020). He has received a variety of prizes and awards for teaching and research, including the prestigious Joanne Martin Trailblazer Award in 2018 (from the OMT Division of the Academy of Management) in recognition of “spearheading the establishment of organizational discourse as a field of research in organization and management studies, through intellectual contributions and community building efforts”.

Claus Rerup is Professor of Management and former Vice President Academic Affairs / Dean of Faculty at Frankfurt School (2021-2023). As an organizational scholar engaging in fieldwork, his research reveals the ambiguity and politics of the modern workplace by tracing how people are learning from experience, making sense of complex situations, and coping with disinformation and competing goals. His research has been published in top-tier peer-reviewed academic journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and Organization Science.

Professor Rerup received several awards for his research as well as grants from the Danish Social Science Research Council, the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Novo Nordisk, and several private foundations.

He served on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Organization Studies, and Strategic Organization. He received the Outstanding Reviewer Award for his service to Organization Science four times. He co-edited a special issue on Research Frontiers on the Attention-Based View of the Firm in Strategic Organization. He was also a co-editor of Organizational Routines: How they are Created, Maintained, and Changed by Oxford University Press, and the Cambridge Handbook of Routine Dynamics.
