Sensors Systems and Healthcare Impact

‘Connected Sensing 2027’ will showcase recent advances in connected sensing technologies for health and healthcare applications. The conference aims to foster collaboration, networking and knowledge exchange across the full innovation pipeline, from sensor design, materials development, and device engineering through to manufacturing, translation, commercialisation, and real-world healthcare impacts. The conference program will highlight scientific advances, translation success stories, healthcare impacts, industry perspectives, and clinical needs, while exploring emerging challenges and opportunities for future research and implementation.

Researchers, clinicians, engineers, industry partners, and innovators working across the rapidly evolving field of sensor technologies for health and healthcare applications are invited to participate. Conference themes include biochemical and biophysical sensors, wearable and implantable devices, soft robotics, sensor systems, design and integration, advanced materials and manufacturing, energy storage, artificial intelligence and data analytics, cybersecurity, digital health, translation, commercialisation, and implementation.

We welcome oral and poster presentations on recent advances in sensor technologies for health and healthcare applications. The conference program will feature international plenary and invited speakers, technical sessions, industry engagement activities, workshops, panels, HDR and ECR development opportunities, mentoring activities, and networking events.

The conference will be held at Sydney CBD, Australia at the Parkroyal Darling Harbour from Wednesday the 17th to Friday 19th  February 2027.

Kevin Plaxco, a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, holds appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry and of BioEngineering.

Prior to joining UCSB in 1998 Dr. Plaxco received his Ph.D. from Caltech and performed postdoctoral studies at Oxford and the University of Washington.

Dr. Plaxco’s research focus is on the physics of biomolecular folding and its engineering applications. A major aim of the group’s applied research is to harness the speed and specificity of folding in the development of sensors, adaptable surfaces, and smart materials. Dr. Plaxco has co-authored more than 250 papers and two dozen patents on protein folding, protein dynamics, and folding-based sensors and materials. He serves on the scientific boards of a half dozen biotechnology firms, several of which are commercializing technologies developed by his group, and has also written a popular science book on Astrobiology.

I work with healthcare executives, boards, government stakeholders, and technology partners to unlock safe and effective use of technology to advance patient outcomes—from precision medicine and clinical genomics to equitable healthcare delivery.

Previously Deputy Chief Scientist at CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, I bring deep expertise bridging healthcare research and technology enablement. With a PhD in AI, my background includes designing and evaluating transformative digital health solutions and leading globally distributed technical teams across Europe, the USA, and Australia.

I serve as advisor and board member to startups, SMEs, research entities, and higher education institutions. Passionate advocate for diversity in STEM and active mentor for emerging leaders in healthcare and technology.

Scientia Professor Justin Gooding is currently an ARC Industry Laureate Fellow. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the International Society of Electrochemistry. He is the inaugural editor-in-chief of the journal ACS Sensors.

He graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) from Melbourne University before spending two years working for ICI Research. He then returned to University obtaining a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford and received post-doctoral training at the Institute of Biotechnology in Cambridge University. He returned to Australia in 1997 as a Vice-Chancellor’s Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) before commencing a lectureship at Flinders University in 1998 and then UNSW in 1999. He was promoted to full professor in 2006 and in 2011 he was promoted to Scientia Professor, the highest award for research performance given by UNSW.

Associate Professor Kimberley (Kim) van Schooten is a Senior Research Fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Population Health at UNSW Medicine & Health. She trained in Human Movement Sciences at VU University Amsterdam, completing her PhD in 2015, and has held research positions in the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia before joining NeuRA in 2017.

Kim leads a research program transforming how mobility and fall risk are measured and managed in older people. Her work integrates wearable sensors, neuroscience, and biomechanics to capture real-world mobility, establishing that daily-life gait provides sensitive markers of fall and injury risk beyond traditional assessments. She investigates the mechanisms underlying mobility decline by linking brain integrity, cognition, affect, muscle strength, pain, and sleep to dynamic changes in mobility. She translates these insights into digital biomarkers, enhanced clinical tools, and scalable interventions embedded into aged care systems through digital health and implementation research.

Hoang-Phuong Phan is an Associate Professor and ARC Future Fellow at the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW Sydney. His research spans a broad range of semiconductor devices and applications, including MEMS/NEMS, integrated sensors, flexible electronics, and three-dimensional micro-architectures. Recent scientific breakthroughs and innovations from the Phan Lab include advanced nanomembranes for long-term implanted bio-barriers and bio-interfaces (SiC), wireless battery-free sensors (wearable and implantable using NFC and BLE), nanothin Si cantilevers for broad-frequency acoustic sensing, low-impedance flexible nanoporous electrodes for neurological recording and stimulation, and 3D electronics and sensors for organoids. Prof. Phan was a visiting scholar at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan in 2016, Stanford University, CA, USA in 2017, and Northwestern University, IL, USA in 2019. Prof. Phan has published over 140  journal articles (e.g. Nature Communications, Science Advances, PNAS, Science Robotics, ACS Nano, Adv. Funct. Mater., Angew Chemie., Nano Energy), two US patents, and four book/book-chapters, all in micro and nanotechnologies. He received full scholarships for all if his higher education, including the Japanese Government scholarships (MEXT) for talented undergraduate & postgraduate students (2006 - 2013) at The University of Tokyo, Japan, and GUPRS & GUIPRS scholarships from Griffith for the doctoral course (2013-2016). Prof. Phan was honored with the GU publication award, the Springer outstanding theses award, the Australian Nanotechnology Network Fellowship, GU Postdoctoral Fellowship, the DECRA award, the Pro Vice-Chancellor ECR award (2019), the Griffith Vice-Chancellor Excellence in Research Award for ECR (2020), the GROW award from UNSW, and the Future Fellow from the Australian Research Council in 2024. He serves in the Executive Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Conferences on MicroElectroMechanical Systems (IEEE MEMS).

Professor Paul Egglestone is Founder and Director of FASTLab (Future Arts, Science and Technology laboratory). His work bringing together makers, communities and technology spans almost two decades and is recognised nationally and internationally. He set up FASTLab in 2018 as a translational research hub to deliver transformational research with global impact connecting businesses, NGO’s and government to demonstrate how we can create value through creativity and innovation balancing sustainable economic growth with social and environmental developments. Within the lab, his research focuses on human centred interactions. It harnesses human imagination, empathy, cooperation, co-design, design thinking, visualization, playfulness and creativity to enable a better understanding of the underlying systems of creativity, and motivations of humans. This iterative approach is designed to take speculative ideas into a Beta to Alpha development process and onto commercialisation opportunities. Professor Egglestone is a founding member of the Global Alliance for Media Innovation and formerly founder of the Media Innovation Studio at the University of Central Lancashire working extensively with large media organisations like the BBC, Haymarket. The Guardian, The Independent, ITV and Google.

Dr. Qinghua Lu is the Group Leader of Software Systems Research Group at CSIRO and a Senior Principal Research Scientist specialising in AI engineering, AI safety and responsible AI.

She is the only member from Australia among the 40 experts appointed to the United Nations' Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, the first global scientific body dedicated entirely to AI. Within the United Nation's AI Panel, she leads Working Group 4 on Security, Systems, and Environmental Implications.

She has been actively contributing to global and national AI initiatives, including the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, Frontier Model Forum, Australia’s AI Safety Standards. In recognition of her leadership and impact, she received the Asia-Pacific Women in AI Trailblazer Award in 2023.

She has published over 200 papers in premier international journals/conferences and delivered influential keynotes including “AI Engineering: From Software-Centric Systems to AIware-Centric Systems” at the 48th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2026, A* conference). She recently published two bestselling AI practitioner books with Pearson Addison-Wesley: Responsible AI: Best Practices for Creating Trustworthy AI Systems and Engineering AI Systems: Architecture and DevOps Essentials.

My research group works in the area of vascular fluid dynamics. We work closely with local hospitals, including Prince of Wales, Royal Hospital for Women and Concord Hospital, and also with local medical companies.

Our research includes work on the blood flow in stenosed and stented arteries (including bifurcations), hemodialysis, myocardial bridging and we also have developed new methodologies for surgical trainers and ultrasound imaging.

His research focuses on gallium-based liquid metals for stretchable electronics, interconnects, and thermal interface materials, as well as wearable biomedical sensing and bio-hybrid robotics.

Dr. Jae-Woong Jeong is a KAIST Endowed Chair Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2012 and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2012 to 2014. Prior to joining KAIST, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder from 2015 to 2017. His research focuses on adaptive bioelectronics—electronic systems that enable physically adaptive and bidirectional interactions with the human body and brain. His work spans wearable and implantable biointerfaces for neural interfacing, physiological monitoring, and therapeutic intervention, with applications in bioelectronic medicine, neuroscience, and human–machine interfaces. His research aims to advance next-generation bioelectronic technologies toward seamless biological integration and clinical translation.

Dr. Jeong has received several notable honors, including the Korea Scientist and Engineer Award from the Ministry of Science and ICT (2025), the S-Oil Young Scientist Award (2023), and recognition for one of the Top 100 National R&D Achievements in Korea (2023). He currently serves as an Associate Editor of ACS Digital Medical Engineering.

Saeid Iranmanesh received his Ph.D. in ICT Engineering from the University of Wollongong in 2015. He has extensive experience in research, teaching, and academic leadership in higher education, complemented by strong research and development experience in industry. He has also worked with MicroMax company as a Senior Research Fellow on the ARC Sensor Hub project. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. His research interests include wireless networks and sensing, the Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent transportation systems, and smart cities.

Abstract guidelines:

  • The abstract template must be used for the submission of abstracts. The easiest way to use this abstract form is by cutting and pasting unformatted text into it to maintain the document’s present format.
  • Please limit abstracts to one (1) page (350 words) and < 10 MB in size.
  • Please upload the abstract as a pdf, doc or docx.
  • Please indicate your preference for Oral or Poster presentation when submitting your abstract. Note oral presentation slots are limited.  
  • Oral presentation will be approximately 15 minutes including Q&A (We would suggest 12 minutes for your presentation and 3 minutes for questions).
  • Posters should be no larger than A0 (84 cm wide by 119 cm long) in portrait format only (not landscape).
  • The poster session will take place on the afternoon of Day 2 (18 February 2027) of the Conference.
  • Abstract submissions are due 30 September 2026, at 11:59 pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).
  • All abstracts will be peer reviewed by the Scientific Committee after submission closes.

  • Getting to the venue

    Sydney Airport is conveniently located 8 km (5 miles) from the venue, located in Sydney’s CBD. That’s only 13-minutes by train for approx. AUD18, or 25-minutes by car, taxi or ride share for approx. AUD45-55. For guests staying at the hotel, the venue is just a short downhill walk away.

    Limited valet parking is available at the hotel for a flat rate of $65 per day. Alternatively, guests can park at the nearby Cinema Centre Car Park, located approximately 5 minutes from the venue.     Integrated public transport network

    While most places attendees need to go are easily accessible by foot, the city’s extensive public transport network is always nearby. It includes buses, trains, light rail and ferries. It’s simple and easy to use with one electronic ticket, the Opal Card, providing access to public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions.

    Delegates travelling on an Adult fare can also choose to use their credit card (Amex, Mastercard or Visa, or a linked device) for contactless payment at all Opal readers. Fares are calculated on the distance travelled and are capped to ensure delegates can travel all day for no more than AUD15.


    Taxi and ride share

    Many private taxi companies operate in the city. You can book taxis, hail them from the kerb or engage one at any taxi rank. Rideshare providers Uber, Bolt (Taxify), GoCatch, OLA, and Shebah also operate in Sydney.
