Convection-Permitting Modelling Workshop 2027
Welcome
The Convection-Permitting Modelling workshop 2027 will address the theme: Convection-permitting climate modelling across scales: from global to regional to local. It will bring together scientists working at the forefront of high-resolution climate modelling. Convection-permitting models operate at kilometre-scale resolution, allowing them to represent important weather and climate processes, such as thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, clouds, land–atmosphere interactions, coastal effects, and urban climate, in much greater detail than traditional climate models. The workshop will explore advances in model development, computational methods, artificial intelligence, data assimilation, observations, model evaluation, scale interactions, coupling processes, extreme events, and climate impacts. By connecting global, regional, and local modelling communities, the workshop aims to improve understanding of high-impact weather and climate processes and support the development of more reliable climate information for research, planning, and decision-making.
The workshop will be held at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney from February 1-4, 2027, with additional side events on the February 5th. We encourage abstract (oral and poster) submissions across the full range of high-resolution modelling at kilometre resolutions or higher.

Dynamical cores, parameterizations, GPUs, scalable algorithms, AI-assisted methods, I/O solutions, and hybrid modelling approaches
Scale interactions and coupling processes
Land-atmosphere, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and weather-climate coupling.
AI and data-driven modelling including data assimilation
Using AI in and with km-scale models. Data assimilation at km-scales including reanalysis.
Convection, clouds, precipitation, and extreme events
Representation, evaluation and understanding using km-scale models.
Land-atmosphere interactions including urban climate
Development, processes and understanding.
Model evaluation and observations
Using field campaigns, radar, satellite observations, and high-density observation datasets to evaluate km-scale models.
Extratropical weather and tropical-extratropical interactions
Representation, evaluation and understanding using km-scale models.

Randwick is the suburb on the Eastern side of the UNSW Kensington Campus. It has a range of hotels and restaurants on offer.
Coogee Beach is the closest beach to UNSW Sydney, about 2.3 km from the campus. There are a range of seaside hotels here.
